MOOve Over and Make Room for cow chip Bingo for Schools
Orcutt Academy High School PTSA is offering an interesting opportunity for a lucky winner to pocket an extra $1250: Cow Chip Bingo - and it's not the bingo your grandma plays on Wednesday night at the Chumash.
The opportunity, which involves a cow and a grid drawn on the grass on the baseball field at the back of the school, works by allowing people to purchase a $10 deed to a square on the field. On Saturday, February 4 at 11AM, a very special guest - a cow – will be led onto the gridded baseball field and the crowd will wait captivated with the movements of the cow until the bovine does its "duty," – and it has to be number 2.
At the first event, two years ago, the cow took about an hour to plant its compost, the second year, only about 10 minutes. So you never know how long it's going to take, " says Sean Dasmann, who happens to be PTSA's vice-president, owner of AMS Entertainment and the festivities' master of ceremonies. "The element of surprise is part of the fun; no matter how long it takes, it will be a fun day and a great chance to raise some much needed funds for the school."
The person who owns the square on the field where the cow poops will be declared the winner of $1,000. If the winner is in attendance and claims the prize within 10 minutes, he or she will pocket an additional $250. "So it pays to be in the audience," explains Dasmann. Festivities, including music by the school band, performances by its choir and cheerleaders as well as food concessions offered by student clubs, will begin at 10AM.
Ticket sales have been brisk," said Dasmann, "Students have been selling tickets and their clubs receive a portion of the proceeds, so student clubs benefit as well as the PTSA."
Due to state budget cuts, local schools increasingly face tough decisions about how to fund classroom supplies, library books and necessary equipment. The funds raised through this year's Cow Chip Bingo will be used directly in the classroom.
