American Legion Post 534 Contributes to Veterans & Community
The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a “patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness.” The nation’s largest veterans organization, the American Legion is committed to mentoring and sponsoring youth programs, advocating patriotism and honor, and supporting service members and veterans by offering a number of local programs and activities.
American Legion Post 534 supports our veterans and the community of Orcutt by volunteering at the Santa Maria VA Medical Clinic, by sending local high school students to state educational programs, by providing scholarships, by supporting the Caltrans Adopt-a-Highway program, and by decorating the Orcutt Christmas tree each year.
In addition, the American Legion Color Guard marches in local parades and participate in Veteran memorial services and Post 534 is the Chartered Organization for Boy Scout Troop 91 and Cub Scout Pack 91.
The American Legion family also includes the American Legion Auxiliary, the Sons of the American Legion, and the American Legion Riders.
The Auxiliary is made up of the mothers, grandmothers, wives, daughters, sisters, granddaughters, and great-granddaughters of members of the American Legion. Their main objectives are to support the Legion, to “advance understanding of patriotism and responsibility of citizenship” and to “promote all that is good in the nation today, tomorrow and for generations to come through serving others first and not self”.
The Sons of the American Legion was created in 1932 and also places a high degree of importance on American traditions and values. Known as the Legion Family, all three organizations aim to “improve the quality of life for our nation’s children, care for veterans and their families, and… teach the fundamentals of good citizenship.”
The American Legion Riders, whose members come from each of the three offshoots, are also united by their patriotism. This varied group of motorcycle enthusiasts can be seen in local parades when not out collecting Toys for Tots or raising money for children’s hospitals, veteran’s care facilities, and various scholarship programs.
